Jan. 2014 and late Dec. 2013 still witness some progress in China's biomaterials industry. For example, China is now quickening the developmental pace of the bio-based chemical fiber industry. The Implementation Plan of Bio-based Materials Projects passed the experts' revision and went through governmental examination and approval procedures in Dec. 2013. Besides, Soybean Flour Based Wood Adhesives becomes an issue to be discussed in the 2014 China International Bio-based Technology and Partnering Conference held on 7-8 May, 2014. Moreover, the project namely biological preparation and industrial application of functional polymer amino acid was rewarded the Jiangsu First-class Sci-tech Prize on 23 Jan., 2014.

As for the raw materials, Landian Biological developed non-crop biomass raw materials to produce succinic acid by biological fermentation and is constructing a 10,000 t/a production line, which is planned to be put into production at the end of 2014. However, in 2014, BDO capacity is predicted to increase by 634,000 t/a, which will much exceed the market demand and will probably lead to the continuous price downturn of BDO in 2014.
On 29 Dec. 2013, the Implementation Plan of Bio-based Materials Projects, initiated by the National Development and Reform Commission and other related departments, passed the experts' revision and went through governmental examination and approval procedures. China is now quickening the developmental pace of the bio-based chemical fiber industry.

Due to the serious environmental problems caused by synthetic resin adhesives, it is an inevitable trend to develop eco-friendly adhesives. Bio-based formaldehyde-free adhesives with a broad market, will become the main products in the adhesive industry.

On 15 Jan., 2014, Henkel and Danimer Scientific reached an agreement to jointly develop bio-based hot melt adhesives. This is a major breakthrough in the movement to use renewable bio-based materials in adhesives. However, the application of hot melt adhesives, along with the R&D and commercial production of bio-based materials, is witnessing slow development in China. Nevertheless, bio-based hot melt adhesives may have a good long-term potential.

The project namely biological preparation and industrial application of functional polyamino acid was rewarded Jiangsu First-class Sci-tech Prize. It is a breakthrough in domestic polyamino acid industry.
However, China is still in the initial stage of the industrial development with less investment in R&D. The main limitation is deficient technology.

Landian Biological develops non-crop biomass raw materials to produce succinic acid by biological fermentation, which lowers the production cost of succinic acid and downstream PBS plastic, and may further promote the application of PBS plastic.

In 2014, the newly-added BDO capacity will much exceed the market demand. The concentrated capacity release will intensify competition and exacerbate oversupply, which will probably lead to the continuous price downturn of BDO in 2014.
